As if being on a hit TV show wasn’t enough, Lucy Hale also shows off her singing chops in her new film, A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song. The multi-talented actress plays Katie Gibbs, the Cinderella character who wows her Prince Charming (Harry Potter hunk Freddie Stroma) with a private musical performance.
Celebuzz recently caught up with Lucy to discuss her journey in becoming Cinderella and, of course, what that pesky “A” has been up to in Pretty Little Liars.
Tell us a little bit about the project and what drew you to it.
A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song is a classic Cinderella story with a modern twist. It’s a musical. It’s based around music and the love of music by this girl, Katie, who I play. She’s the outcast and she goes through lots of obstacles. It’s just very inspiring to see what this girl goes through and how she still comes out on top.
So you’re kind of following footsteps of past Cinderellas like Hilary Duff and Selena Gomez. How did you prepare yourself for the big role?
I try really not to think about it, I guess. It’s along the same thematic lines but Katie is a different character than the other two girls. I feel like it has a different tone to it compared to the other two. It’s great to draw inspiration from people but, for this particular role, I just try to take what I could from the script and bring what I could to the character.
You sing in the film and you’re featured on the soundtrack too. Do you plan on pursuing music in the future?
I’d love to! Recording the songs for the film was really good for me. I think it shows people what I was capable of. I mean, I’d love to make an album. It’s about timing and the right sound. For me, I don’t want to release something that’s not 100% Lucy. I want it to feel real so we’ll see. There are a few things that could possibly work out.
Your “Prince Charming” Freddie Stroma said you were a mischievous creature on set. Do you agree?
[Laughs] Yeah! I’m kind of a jokster. My favorite thing to do to Freddie is just make him feel uncomfortable in interviews. I like to embarrass him and that’s why he says that. It got to the point where we were just doing these interviews and it was the same questions over and over again. So at the beginning of these interviews, I was like, “Okay, you have to say sailboat by the end of this.” So, we’d make up stories that would happen to him and he would use the word “sailboat”. We were just trying to keep it fun. We all really got along.
What can we expect from Pretty Little Liars for the rest season?
Our therapist, the one the girls are seeing on the show, has figured out who A is! We’re sort of left with will they figure it out who it is or will they not. “A” also gives each girl a task to complete or something really bad will happen. Aria has to get rid of someone and make them leave town. So basically, the girls have to do something that’s either going to hurt themselves or someone they care about. It’s exciting stuff!
Do you see a lot of yourself in Aria?
I feel like for every character I play, I put in a little bit of myself. I’m a much more of a lively and bubbly person compared to Aria. We’re both very stubborn and driven but Aria is very romantic. She believes in that fairytale and wears her heart on her sleeve. I think that’s where we differ—wow, I sound like I hate love or something! [Laughs] No, she’s a little bit more vulnerable, I guess you can say.
